Accounting

 

Accounting is the means of recording and capturing the financial activity of an individual or entity over a period of time, and serves as the structural backbone on which the capital markets and financial institutions are based. Accounting methods and regulations shape the modern business landscape, establishing the role and scope of each player in both the private and public sectors. Our accounting curriculum was formulated to give students the skills they need to handle any aspect of an accounting position at an accounting firm or other organization. The department gives students particularly broad knowledge of economics and business management.

Our faculty consists of top Israeli lecturers in the fields of practical accounting and business, who are experts in finance, auditing, and taxes. Graduates of the department occupy key positions at leading accounting firms, the Finance Ministry, the Income Tax Authority, and the Securities Commission, as well as in the private sector, and these connections help graduates find jobs after completing their studies.

In addition, our accounting researchers are on the cutting edge of the field. Their research addresses, among others, auditing, financial and organizational consulting, strategic planning, and practical accounting. Our goal is to ensure that alumni are prepared for a successful career in accounting, in the fields of auditing and finance specifically, and in the business world overall.

 

Data Science

The internet is one of the biggest technological achievements since the invention of the printing press, and since its inception, it has revolutionized the business world. It has generated exponential growth in data and, accordingly, in the need for data analytics. For any modern business or company to remain a relevant player in the competitive field, it is critical that it has the ability and capacity to gather and utilize the virtually unlimited data generated by the internet. Our curricula in the Data Science department are meticulously cultivated to ensure that our students acquire the analytical skills and professional tools necessary to succeed in the data science industry.

Our faculty strives to optimize data analytics through cutting-edge research, methodologies, and algorithms. The scope of research ranges from all major internet-related fields including social media analysis, game theory, data mining, text mining, sentiment analysis, and analysis of large networks. The breakthroughs stemming from our researchers in the data science department are applied to other specialties of business administration, such as the Finance, Marketing, and Strategy departments in both Israel and abroad. Our research transcends the limits of academia, and as a result, our practical innovations and advances continue to influence the dynamic structure of the modern business world.

Our researchers have published their work in leading international journals of computer science and information systems. In addition to teaching undergraduate and MBA-level courses, an emphasis is placed on doctoral studies. We have a strong group of Ph.D. and Master’s-level students in the department who are conducting state-of-the-art research in sentiment analysis, text mining, information extraction, and social media analysis. Our alumni graduate with firsthand knowledge and experience, yielding in-demand candidates within the business sector.

Finance and Banking

Finance is the field of business administration that addresses banking, leverage or debt, credit, capital markets, money, and investments. Within the firm context, finance relates to the process of managing monetary assets and acquiring needed funds. In a given society, it is the role of the financial institutions to facilitate and supervise economic activity through institutions such as banks and stock markets. Our curricula offer a wide range of analytical tools and financial models, giving our graduates the skills they need to succeed in both the private and public sectors.

Our faculty is comprised of world-renowned lecturers and researchers whose research interests span all major fields in finance, and they maintain strong ties with various departments and research centers both within Hebrew University and abroad. Their expertise encompasses a broad scope of relevant financial structures, including fintech, asset pricing, corporate governance, capital market dynamics, portfolio theory, and risk management. The research from our faculty has been instrumental in shaping Israeli financial policy and practices in the industrial and public governance sectors.

Our researchers regularly publish their work in leading international finance and banking journals, including Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, Review of Financial Studies, and many others. In addition to teaching undergraduate and MBA-level courses, an emphasis is placed on doctoral studies. There is a strong group of Ph.D. students in our department, and some of our graduates currently hold academic positions both in Israel and abroad. Our students graduate with the analytical skills, network connections, and practical experiences that enable and prepare them to handle challenging financial markets and banking systems.

Marketing

Marketing is critical for any entity, no matter its size, goal, or field, that seeks to remain a relevant player in today’s dynamic business climate. Creating sustainable value for an organization is a key element in market management, with companies constantly needing to adapt to dynamic environments by utilizing various strategies and research in order to remain relevant and maintain their value. Analytical and creative marketers strive to create value as a product of the interplay between a company, customers, and competition. Our marketing curriculum is designed to give students the critical thinking skills necessary to thrive in competitive marketplaces.

Our faculty is challenged to optimize organizational value through cutting-edge research, systems, and methodologies. The scope of their research includes social networks, product and service diffusion, and creativity in new product design and advertising. Moreover, researchers collaborate with experts in other fields, creating a wholistic approach to marketing through coordination with disciplines such as psychology, behavioral science, operations research, and data science. By using scientific tools such as quantitative processing systems and text mining, our research continues to blaze trails worldwide. We believe in going beyond theory alone, and consequently have made practical breakthroughs and applications that continue to change and raise the standard of the business world today.

Our students graduate with the analytical skills, network connections, and practical experiences that enable and prepare them to fill senior marketing management positions in the workforce.

Operations Research

In today’s dynamic business environment, executives are compelled to make an enormous number of decisions that can yield an even larger number of outcomes. The research discipline of Operations Research utilizes analytics and creates heuristic tools to optimize decision-making and problem solving. By breaking down the potential interplay between players, problems, decisions, and outcomes, operations research seeks the optimal scenario through methodical analysis. Our curricula are thoughtfully designed to develop our graduates’ statistical and analytical skills, giving them the tools necessary to thrive in the professional sphere.

Our faculty is on the cutting edge of research in the field. Their research interests span deterministic and stochastic operations research modeling and cover transport, location, scheduling, queuing, performance measurement, quality, and game theory. We take a wholistic research approach and are in constant cooperation with other business disciplines both in Israel and abroad. Our researchers have published their work in leading periodicals.

Organizational Behavior and Human Resources Management

Organizational behavior is the research discipline addressing the behaviors of individuals in organizational settings by systematically investigating individual, group, and organizational processes. The goal of organizational behavior research is to improve organizations’ efficiency and the quality of life of employees in their work environment.

Research in Organization Behavior is focused on organizational questions at either the micro or the macro levels, and employs both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. Among the micro topics are the social and organizational implications of individuals’ values and traits, the effects of feedback, feed-forward and listening, and employees’ work-related attitudes and behaviors. At the macro level, research topics include the role of meaning in institutional processes, and how new meanings about technology emerge.

The Organizational Behavior Department cultivates a supportive and nurturing social environment, facilitating an open exchange of ideas, and consistently attracting high-caliber students, who graduate with the critical thinking and analytical skills needed to enable them to handle complex organizational issues in the real world.

Strategy and Entrepreneurship

The Strategy and Entrepreneurship Department studies the broad subject of the life cycle of the firm. Located in the capital of the “Start Up Nation”, the department has the unique vantage point of involvement in inspecting and constructing the strategy for real life Start Up companies and Entrepreneurs. Our curricula are carefully cultivated to ensure that our alumni graduate with the analytical tools and critical thinking skills necessary to succeed in the dynamic and ever-changing field of startups and entrepreneurship.

Our faculty and graduate students study various aspects of firm growth, with a particular emphasis on Hi-Tech firms. The research seeks to better understand real-world challenges facing both the private and public sectors. We study topics such as the growth of the start-up firm, internationalization challenges for small and medium sized enterprises, the geographic and organizational boundaries of firms, the relationships between technological innovation and firm growth, governance mode selection and the antecedents and consequences of intra- and inter-industry diversification. Our research is published in top-tier innovation and strategy journals with the aim to introduce cutting edge insights that are relevant both to scholars and practitioners.
