In the article, titled “Human-AI interaction research needs to be embedded in psychological theory,” Bigman and his partners warn against research that focuses only on current phenomena (such as trust in ChatGPT), without explaining the psychological mechanisms behind them. According to them, without theoretical anchoring, findings are liable to become obsolete quickly with every new version of the technology, and not contribute to cumulative scientific progress.
The article calls on researchers to return to the basics: to use existing theories or develop new ones, to ask not only what is happening but why, and to examine to what extent the findings are truly generalizable in a world where technology is constantly changing.
We congratulate Dr. Bigman on a significant, sharp, and particularly timely publication.
